Does my XREF 20 microphone require phantom power?

Permanently deleted user

Yes. It is an omnidirectional condenser microphone, so make sure the phantom power is switched on.

Most XLR to XLR cables will be able to transmit phantom power but not all XLR to TRS cables will so make sure that your cable can supply phantom power to the microphone!

Hello,

can you suggest any good USB Audio interface which also have Phantom +48v PSU for XREF2 and truly nice mic input preamp?

There are many on the market, like Behringer UM2, Scarlett Solo 2nd gen, ... but i need info which of those have almost flat mic input/preamp frequency response from 20Hz - 20kHz. It is imortant for me becouse i want to measure speakers response.

Thanks,

Cheers

Hi Boban,

Pretty much all of those will get the job done just fine. These days almost all basic entry level interfaces are flat and capable of +48v as well as 44.1 kHz sample rate. It might get tricky with older interfaces/preamps analog vintage circuitry. UM2 and Solo are both safe to use.

Hi Kārlis!

I have an Apogee Symphony I/O Mk II Thunderbolt (Version: 2x6 Analog + AES + 8 Optical Module) Interface, with a 44.1 kHz sample rate.

But I don't have any +48v Phantom Power ON/OFF button in this configuration (on the screen of the Interface or in the software that comes with this Interface).

What to do? Please help...

*I do have a Slate Digital Ultra Linear Microphone Preamp VMS ONE with the +48V feature - maybe i can connect it to my Apogee Symphony I/O interface and use it with your Sonarworks microphone for my speakers calibration? - If yes, how to setup the gain level on this preamp?

Any other recommendations?

I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

Kind Regards,

Andy

Hey Andy,

In this case, you should be perfectly able to employ the preamp as it is a solid-state unit and is not likely to introduce much coloration.

Regarding the input gain levels, one of the first steps of the measurement is designed specifically for that. It will test the signal and tell you how it should be adjusted.
